1 case – 3/75cl Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanee Conti 1998 @ £12,495 per 3 IB & OWC (Lowest Global Wine Searcher £19,500-£21,995++) now – photos attached – bought EP John Armit stock stored Octavian, 1 slightly lower level (priced accordingly), sequential numbers, good consistent colours – c.£7-8k lower than any 3 pack OWC price in the global market

Very deep golden color. An openly exotic if still fresh nose offers very good if not truly stunning complexity on the dried fruit aromas that include mango, peach and apricot along with the hallmark floral scents. There is seriously good concentration, indeed this is positively unctuous, to the big-bodied and overtly powerful flavors that possess terrific depth on the explosively long finale. This is impressive in every way yet I wouldn't describe it as typical and while this is going to live for years I'm not convinced that it wouldn't be better to drink this now as it risks becoming heavy in time. In short, this is imposing if particular.

1 case – 3/75cl Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanee Conti 2004 @ £19,495 per 3 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £25,000-£33,000++) now – photo attached – previously banded – bought EP C&B stock stored Octavian sequential numbers, good consistent colours

A deft touch of wood frames very ripe aromas of honeysuckle, spice, white flower, peach, pear and anise that introduce remarkably powerful and full-bodied flavors oozing with dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine on the hugely long finish. This is a flat out big wine by any standard but it's particularly massive by the standards of the 2004 vintage which generally produced leaner and more elegant wines. However here the dry extract levels are such that the finish is almost chewy yet this is as refined and pure as any recent vintage with the possible exception of the '96. This will require at least a decade to be at its best and not surprisingly, it would be advisable to give it this time as the overall impression is closed, reticent and youthfully austere at present. I very much like the '04 version but for those used to greater flamboyancy à la the 2003, it would perhaps be better to choose another vintage as this is likely to always remain a discreet wine by the standards of the Domaine's Montrachet.

1 case – 3/75cl Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanee Conti 2006 @ £20,495 per 3 IB & re-packed carton now – photo attached – bought EP C&B stock stored Octavian – sequential numbers (split OWC6), high fill, good consistent colours

1 bottle – 1/75cl Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanee Conti 2006 @ £6,695 per 1 bottle IB & re-packed carton now – photo available - bought EP C&B stock stored Octavian

As it was originally from cask, the 2006 Montrachet remains relatively discreet with almost shy white flower, grapefruit, mildly exotic orchard fruit and subtle spice notes trimmed in just the right amount of wood that lead to beautifully textured, pure, intense and focused big-bodied flavors wrapped around a firm acid spine and culminating in a wonderfully racy, dry, linear and mineral-driven finish. This is one of the more elegant and sophisticated vintages for this wine (much more so than the 2005 though it's not as big, rich and dramatic) and it's likely to be more of a Montrachet of finesse rather than overt muscle. I quite like this because even though it's ripe, there is a very firm acid skeleton that should allow the '06 Montrachet to age for a very long time though be at its peak in a decade.

1 case – 1/75cl Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanee Conti 2013 @ £6,595 per 1 bottle IB & OWC now – bought EP C&B stock stored Octavian

A whiff of post-bottling reduction does little to detract from the strikingly well-layered and ever-so-mildly exotic fruit, white flower and softly wooded nose. The super-rich and full-bodied yet beautifully delineated flavors possess a borderline painful intensity along with a taut muscularity before culminating a focused, tightly wound and powerful finale that really fans out as it sits on the palate. Moreover, this markedly dry but not really austere effort is what I describe as sneaky long because just as the finish appears to be dying away it suddenly come back and plays hide and seek with your palate. Like most vintages of the Domaine's Montrachet this is undeniably built-to-age but unlike some of them the 2013 rendition is not likely to drink particularly well before the age of at least 10 and should reward somewhere between 15 and 20.

1 case – 1/75cl Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanee Conti 2015 @ £7,095 per 1 bottle IB & OWC now – bought EP C&B stock stored Octavian

The exotic, even tropical nose reflects notes of petrol and wood along with lychee nut, melon, white peach, mango, floral and discreet citrus wisps. The broad-shouldered and impressively dense, bold and muscular flavors coat the palate with seemingly buckets of dry extract that easily buffers the very firm acid spine shaping the surprisingly dry finish (in the context of what is typical for the 2015 vintage) on the hugely long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is excellent and very much in the DRC style.

1 case – 12/75cl Chablis 1er Cru ‘Vaillons’, Domaine Vincent Dauvissat 2016 @ £1,395 per 12 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,500++) 2-3 weeks

The 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons hails from a parcel that's a mere 400 meters away from the domaine's holdings in Séchet, yet the wines are worlds apart. The Vaillons exhibits a muskier bouquet of orange blossom, peach and honeycomb, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure and textural palate that's expansive and open-knit. It's more immediately charming, while the tighter-knit Séchet will need more time.

1 case – 3/75cl Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru ‘La Romanee’, Domaine Vincent Dancer 2016 @ £985 per 3 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £1,170++) now – photos attached

Background wisps of the exotic can be found on the white and yellow orchard fruit, mandarin orange and Granny Smith apple-scented nose. The mouth feel of the middle weight flavors though is cool and retained with a really lovely purity of expression on the highly complex, well-balanced and hugely long finish. This is terrific and a wine that will need at least a few years of cellaring first.

1 case – 6/75cl Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Folatieres’, Domaine Leflaive 2016 @ £2,195 per 6 IB & OWC (Lowest Wine Searcher £2,200-£2,495++) now – bought EP C&B stock stored Octavian

A ripe yet cool and airy nose is comprised by notes of green apple, citrus zest, pear and once again, plenty of floral influence. The notably rich and generously proportioned flavors exude both minerality and salinity on the beautifully complex finale. Despite the richness the mid-palate mouth feel is actually based more on finesse and refinement than usual. Excellent.

1 case – 1/75cl Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanee Conti 2017 @ £8,095 per 1 bottle IB & OWC now – bought EP C&B stock stored Octavian

A restrained nose flirts with the exotic while requiring aggressive swirling to eventually reveal aromas of essence of pear and apple compote, passion fruit, tangerine peel, spice and a subtle but not invisible touch of wood. The dense, opulent and caressing big-bodied flavors possess outstanding mid-palate concentration thanks to the copious amount of sappy dry extract that also buffers the citrus-tinged acidity shaping the hugely long, youthfully austere, dry and gorgeously complex finish. This is at once powerful and muscular yet for all of the imposing size and weight, the balance is impeccable save for a minor touch of warmth. Even so, there is a real sense of harmony that should enable this exceptionally tightly wound beauty to age gracefully for years to come. This is sublime and while 2017 is not the best young Montrachet that I have tasted from the Domaine, but among them and this has the potential to be genuinely great as it should have no problem making for very old bones.

1 case – 12/75cl Meursault, Domaine Coche-Dury 2017 @ £7,595 per 12 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £7,995++) now

A background whiff of reduction isn't enough to detract from the otherwise very Meursault nose combining notes of hazelnut and acacia blossom with those of apple compote, spice and a whisper of brown butter. The impressively rich medium-bodied flavors possess very good volume and evident minerality on the bitter lemon-inflected finish that manages to deliver fine length even though it is still pretty tightly wrapped. Not surprisingly at only 6 years of age, this is still very much on the way up and I would suggest allowing it to continue to slumber for at least another 2 to 3 years and 6 to 8 would almost certainly be better. Lovely juice.

A cool, pure, elegant and equally restrained nose grudgingly reveals notes of green apple, acacia blossom and citrus rind. Once again there is very good volume to the delicious middle weight flavors that possess a sophisticated texture and an abundance of minerality that builds in intensity on the bitter lemon-inflected finale. This youthfully austere effort is quite tightly wound and while it needs to develop better depth, my projected range implicitly assumes that it will.

3 cases – 1/75cl Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanee Conti 2018 @ £5,895 per 1 bottle IB & OWC now – bought EP C&B stock stored Octavian

Discreet wood is present on the exuberantly spicy and markedly exotic nose of passion fruit, dried peach, apricot, fennel, jasmine tea and hints of clove. The incredibly rich broad-shouldered flavors coat the palate with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a thick and textured, indeed almost chewy, character to the lavish and generous finish that is at once fantastically powerful yet impeccably well-balanced, compact and youthfully austere finale that just goes on and on. In the context of the last 5 vintages, this is not the most concentrated of them for the Domaine's Montrachet, but the length is genuinely dazzling as is the upside develop potential.

1 case – 6/75cl St Aubin 1er Cru ‘Derriere Chez Edouard’ Blanc, Domaine Hubert Lamy 2018 @ £420 per 6 IB & OC (Lowest Wine Searcher £495-£510++) now

This too is restrained, airy and distinctly cool with its aromas of citrus, acacia and mineral reduction. The middle weight flavors are not quite as dense but they're equally refined and intense with a pungent salinity that adds to the bracing, chalky, lemony and bone-dry finale.

Cool, restrained and airy aromas reflect notes of wafting citrus, white flower and spiced pear. The racy middle weight flavors exude a bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the gorgeously textured, chiseled and iodine-inflected finale. This is excellent though it's also quite compact at present, so patience strongly suggested.

A less elegant but more complex nose reflects plenty of Chablis typicity with its nose of spiced apple, sea breeze, tidal pool, ripe citrus and a touch of the exotic. There is excellent volume to the intense and muscular flavors that brim with both dry extract and minerality before concluding in a bitter lemon and anise-suffused finish that offers just a bit more depth. Like the Montée de Tonnerre, this very powerful effort should be capable of rewarding up to a decade of cellaring. *Outstanding*

There is enough wood to point out surrounding the mildly exotic and phenolic aromas of dried white and yellow orchard fruit that possess intricate nuances of spice, Asian-style tea, fennel, floral wisps and wet stone. I very much like the highly seductive texture of the caressing and beautifully concentrated mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that display stunningly good length on the very dry and impeccably well-balanced finale. This gorgeous CC should age gracefully for the next 12 to 15 years and drink well for twice that long. A great first effort!

Restrained and distinctly cool aromas include a plethora of floral nuances that add elegance to the white orchard fruit, citrus and soft hazelnut wisps. The incredibly low yields are in evidence as the mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is almost thick yet the bright citrus-tinged acid spine keeps everything in focus on the strikingly long, bone-dry and markedly austere finale. This is a superb Meursault villages and very much built-to-age, indeed it's absolutely going to need it.

Here too firm reduction overshadows the underlying fruit. By contrast, there is excellent energy to the rich, round and sappy medium-bodied flavors that are a combination of minerality and generosity, all wrapped in a balanced, lingering and mildly austere finale. This could use better depth so at least mid-term cellaring would be a good idea.

A markedly more floral-infused nose reveals additional notes of white pepper, tidal pool, iodine and plenty of citrus elements. There is a bit more volume to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that possess excellent punch while keeping a similar level of refinement on the balanced, focused and lingering finale. This is pretty much textbook Vaillons that is built-to-age.

This ripe effort displays an abundance of classic Chablis aromas of smoky mineral reduction, citrus peel, oyster shell and acacia blossom as well as just the vaguest hint of the exotic. There is terrific punch and a taut muscularity to the more mineral-driven middleweight plus flavors that exhibit focused power on the impressively long and well-balanced finale. This is the densest wine in the range in 2022 and a wine that should age accordingly. In a word, brilliant.

A slightly riper nose is composed of apple, pear compote, white peach, just sliced lemon and a plethora of floral elements. There is fine volume and borderline painful intensity to the beautifully textured and caressing yet seriously energetic larger-bodied flavors that flash impressive power on the bone-dry and strikingly long finish. This very tightly wound effort is excellent and highly recommended.

Smoky aromas of mineral reduction, acacia blossom and green apple gives way to almost painfully intense middle weight flavors that are decidedly citrusy while displaying excellent length on the bone-dry, stony and balanced finale. At least some patience is strongly recommended as this is very tightly wound at present.
